Lumbini is most well known as being the birthplace of Siddhartha Gautama, the Lord Buddha. Though she was married to King Suddhodana, Maya Devi, the mother of Buddha, is said to have given birth on her way to her parent’s house while taking rest in Lumbini under a sakhua tree. A great stone pillar, with an inscription of the history of Buddha on the side, marks the general spot of his birth. One main attraction is the Lumbini Garden, which is spread over eight square kilometers, and is home to numerous ancient stupas, temples, ruins and antiquities dating back more than 2,500 years. The other main point of interest is the Maya Devi Temple, devoted to the mother of Buddha.
